The God of All Comfort

Bible in one year:
2 Samuel –

Luke :1–19
[God] comforts us in our problems, so that we can comfort those in any problem.

2 Corinthians 1:4
Today's Scriptures & Insight:

2 Corinthians 1:3–7

Radamenes was just a kitten when his owner left him in an animal shelter, thinking he was too sick to recover. The kitten was breastfed back to health and adopted by the veterinarian. He then became a full-time resident at the shelter and now spends his days "comforting" cats and dogs, fresh out of surgery or recovering from illness, through his warm presence and gentle purring.
That story is a small picture of what our loving God does for us, and what we can do for others in return. He cares for us in our sickness and struggles, and He calms us with His presence. The Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians calls our God, "the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort" (1:3). When we are discouraged, depressed, or mistreated, He is there for us. When we turn to Him in prayer, He "comforts us in all our problems" (vers. 4).
But verse 4 does not end there. Paul, who had experienced intense suffering, continues, "so that we may comfort those in any problem with the comfort we ourselves receive from God." Our Father comforts us, and when we have experienced His comfort, we are enabled to comfort others.
Our compassionate Savior, who suffered for us, is more than able to comfort us in our suffering and anguish (v. 5). He helps us through our pain and equips us to do the same for others.

Reflect & Pray
When have you experienced God's comfort during a difficult time? When have you offered God's comfort to others?

My God, thank you for Your comforting presence in my pain and pain. Help me in turn to be a comfort to others.

No matter how far down the line we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others.

Any time I am in a difficult time in my life, God has given me His comfort.... and sometimes, all I can do for others is to offer that same promise of comfort and pray for them.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
