Quarantined by fear

Bible in one year:
2 Samuel 6–8

Luke 15:1–10
Look for his kingdom.

Luke 12:31

Today's Scriptures & Insight:

Luke 12:22–34
In 2020, an outbreak of coronavirus left the world in fear. People were quarantined, countries were locked up, flights and major events were cancelled. Those living in areas without known cases were still afraid they might get the virus. Graham Davey, an anxiety expert, believes negative news broadcasts are "prone to making you sadder and more anxious." A meme that circulated on social media showed a man watching the news on television, and asked him how to stop worrying. In response, another person in the room came up and flipped the TV, suggesting that the answer could be a change in focus!

Luke 12 gives us some tips to help us stop worrying: "Seek his kingdom" (vers. 31). We seek the kingdom of God when we focus on the promise that His followers have an inheritance in heaven. When we face difficulties, we can change our approach and remember that God sees us and knows our needs (vv. 24–30).

Jesus encourages His disciples: "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father is glad to give you the kingdom" (vers. 32). God enjoys blessing us! Let us ado it, knowing that He cares for us more than the birds of the air and the flowers of the field (vv. 22–29). Even in difficult times, we can read the scriptures, pray for God's peace, and trust in our good and faithful God.

Reflect & Pray
What's making you fear today? What is one thing you can do to seek the kingdom of God when you begin to worry?

Love God, instead of living with fear or concern, help me focus on Your care for me.

I believe people are aware of the seriousness and the gravity of the virus, but to me, it seemed the constant haranguing about it on every news program instilled fear, not caution, into people's minds.
There are so many adversities that we face, in every area of our lives, and I do find myself focusing on the problems too much. I have to remind myself often to "look up and not around" and to seek and trust in the Lord because there are many things I can do nothing about on my own.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
