Extending mercy

Bible in one year:
1 Samuel 30–31

Luke 13:23–35
If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them.

Luke 17:3

Today's Scriptures & Insight:

Luke 17:1–5
Reflecting on how she forgave Manasseh, the man killed her husband and some of her in the Rwandan genocide, Beata said, "My forgiveness is based on what Jesus did. He took the punishment for every evil act all the time. Your cross is the place where we find victory, the place!" Manasseh had written Beata from prison more than once, begging her and God for forgiveness as she detailed the regular nightmares that haunted her. At first he could not extend mercy, saying that he hated him for killing his family. But then "Jesus interfered in his thoughts," and with God's help, some two years later, she forgave him.

In this, Blessed followed Jesus' instruction His disciples forgive those repent. He said that even though they "sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back you saying 'I repent,' you must forgive them" (Luke 17:4). But forgiving can be extremely difficult, as we see from the disciples' reaction: "Increase our faith!" (v. 5).

Beata's faith increased as she prayed for her inability forgive. If, like her, we are struggling forgive, we can ask God through His Holy Ghost help us do so. As our faith increases, He helps us forgive.

Reflect & Pray
If someone aggravated you later repented, how did you react? How might God help you forgive in these situations?

Jesus, thank you for freeing me from the consequences of my sin through Your death on the cross. I give you the glory!

I'm dealing with a hard situation like that right now. I have forgiven the man, but also believe that he should receive the punishment of our laws.
I've heard others in my own family say they hope he rots in hell. I can forgive their emotional outbursts and we discuss it later when they are calmer. I hope nobody rots in hell.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Forgiveness is a process for me. I have to believe that if I can progress to be a better person so can others. I believe that everyone is redeemable but sometime the only way that they progress to the point of redemption is deal with the consequences of their wrongdoings. God sees the bigger picture whereas it's not so easy for us.
