Living like it's morning

Bible in one year:
1 Samuel 25–26

Luke 12:32–59
The fruit of light consists of all goodness, justice, and truth.

Ephesians 5:9

Today's Scriptures & Insight:

Ephesians 5:1–9
When I have to travel through time zones by air, I try several remedies to avoid jet lag. I think I've tried them all! On one occasion, I decided to adjust my meal on board to the time zone I was heading in. Instead of having dinner with the rest of the passengers, I kept watching a movie and tried to fall asleep. The hours of elective fasting were difficult, and the breakfast that came just before landing left much to be desired. But living "out of place" with those around me worked. He shook my body clock in a new time zone.

Paul knew that if believers in Jesus really reflected him in his life, they would have to live out of place with the world around them. "They were once darkness," but now they were to live as " of light" (Ephesians 5:8. And how could that be? Paul fills the picture: "The fruit of light consists of all goodness, justice, and truth" (vers. 9).

Sleeping over dinner may have seemed silly to the people on my flight, but even when it's midnight in the world, as believers, we're called to live as if it were morning. This may provoke contempt and opposition, but in Jesus we can "walk on the path of love," following the example of the One who "loves us and gives himself for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God"
(v. 2).

Reflect & Pray
Where have your actions and decisions been overaligned with the world around you? What would the fruit of goodness, justice, and truth look like in your life?

Jesus, wake me up until the new day that has come in You. Fill me with your power to live in a "different time zone." Open my eyes to choose kindness, justice and beauty.

There are times that I know people have thought me strange, or at least not being in touch with reality. But there is a reality in Jesus, that is more real than eyes can see or ears can hear. It gives me peace, comfort, and strength in the storms of life and fills me with love for others because He loves me.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
