The Frosting of Faith

Bible in one year:
1 Samuel 22–24

Luke 12:1–31
I remember your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and, I am convinced, now she also lives in you.

2 Timothy 1:5

Today's Scriptures & Insight:

2 Timothy 1:1–5
Hand in hand, my grandson and I jumped through the parking lot to find a special suit back to school. A preschooler now, he was excited about everything, and I was determined to ignite his happiness in joy. I had just seen a cup of coffee with the inscription: "Grandmothers are moms with a lot of frosting." Frosting is equal to fun, glitter, joy! That's my job description like your grandmother, isn't it? that... and so on.

In his second letter to his spiritual Timothy, Paul calls his sincere faith and then attributes his lineage to both Timothy's grandmother, Lois, and his mother, Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5). These women lived their faith in such a way that Timothy also came to believe in Jesus. No doubt Lois and Eunice loved Timothy and anticipated his needs. But clearly, they did more. Paul points to the faith that lives in them as the source of the faith he later lived in Timothy.

My job as a grandmother includes the "glazing" moment of a back-to-school suit. But even more, I am called to moments of frost when I share my faith: bowing my head over chicken nuggets. Noting angelic cloud formations in the sky as works of God's art. Singing along with a song about Jesus on the radio. Let us be courted by the example of moms and grandmothers like Eunice and Lois to let our faith become the icing in life so that others want what we have.

Reflect & Pray
How have you been influenced by the faith of others? How are you living your faith so that others can be influenced?

My God, help me invest my time in living my faith before others.

I remember two Sunday school teachers who taught me more about the Christian walk than they probably realized. One was full of himself and what he did for God... how much he gave, etc. and was critical of others who did not attend our church. The other was humble, and loving. When we asked him about the other churches, he would say that people show love for God and others in different ways and some of the kindest and most loving people he knows attend other churches. He knew how that other teacher was, but he didn't criticize him, just tried to show us the right way to be.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

We are all born with an assortment of shortcomings and progress to grow out of them. That is one reason I try not to be critical of others. We are all at different levels of growth.
