Imperfect plans

Bible in one year:
1 Samuel –18

Luke :1–28
Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails.

Proverbs 19:21

Today's Scriptures & Insight:

Proverbs 19:20–23
I was exploring a library on the lower floor of a new community center when a plane crash suddenly shook the room. A few minutes later it happened again, and then again. A agitated librarian finally explained that a weightlifting area was placed directly above the library, and the noise occurred every time someone lost a weight. Architects and designers had carefully planned many aspects of this next-generation facility, however, someone had forgotten to locate the library away from all the action.

In life too, our plans are often flawed. We overlook important considerations. Our plans don't always explain accidents or surprises. While planning helps us avoid financial deficits, time crises, and health problems, even the most comprehensive strategies can't eliminate all the problems in our lives. We live in a post-Eden world.

With God's help, we can strike a balance between prudently considering the future (Proverbs 6:6–8 and responding to difficulties. God often has a purpose for the problem He allows in our lives. He can use it to develop patience in us, to increase our faith, or simply to draw near to Him. The Bible reminds us, "Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the purpose of the Lord that prevails" (Proverbs 19:21). As we submit our goals and hopes for the future to Jesus, He will show us what He wants to accomplish in us and through us.

Reflect & Pray
How do you respond when your plans don't work or when your expectations aren't met? What would God want you to learn through these experiences?

God, I think you're in control of everything. Help me live wisely in this world, committing all my plans to you.

Wow, talk about hitting home! When I have plans to do something or go somewhere, and those plans get messed up and not accomplished I get upset. I do not take it very well. That includes just the household chores that I had planned to do. I need to change that attitude, maybe something more important happened.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
