Through thick and thin

Bible in one year:
1 Samuel 7–9

Luke 9:18–36
The Cloud of the Lord was upon the tabernacle by day, and the fire was in the cloud at night, in view of all the Israelites during all their journeys.

Exodus 40:38

Today's Scriptures & Insight:

Exodus 40:34–38
On January 28, 1986, the American space shuttle Challenger broke seventy-three seconds after takeoff. In a comfort speech for the nation, President Reagan quoted the poem "High Flight" in which John Gillespie Magee, a World War II pilot, had written about "the uninterested high holiness of space" and the feeling of reaching out to touch "the face of God."

Although we literally cannot touch the face of God, we sometimes experience an impressive sunset or a place of meditation in nature that gives us an overwhelming feeling that He is nearby. Some people these moments "thin places." The barrier separating heaven and earth seems be a little thinner. God feels a little closer.

The Israelites may have experienced a "thin place" by perceiving God's closeness in the wilderness. God provided a pillar of day clouds and a pillar of fire at night guide them through the wilderness (Exodus 40:34–38. When they were staying in the camp, "the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle" (vers. 35). Throughout all their journeys, they knew that God was with them.

As we enjoy the incredible beauty of God's creation, we become aware that He is present everywhere. By speaking Him in prayer, listening Him, and reading the scriptures, we can enjoy fellowship with Him anytime, anywhere.

Reflect & Pray
What places in nature make you feel especially close God? How can you for anytime, anywhere?

Father, help me find you and find you even when I'm lost in a desert.

He always makes His presence known in all His creation. I don't know where I feel it most... the mountains, the oceans, even the vast flatlands all show it. Perhaps one of my favorite, and most readily accessible is the night sky.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

I remember as a teenager, living in the desert. I would would find an area and build a medicine wheel out of the desert rock. I would make an altar to God. I had no idea what or why I was doing it but more was revealed later in life.
