Anchored in truth

Bible in one year:
1 Samuel 1–3

Luke 8:26–56
I'll take him like a peg a firm place.

Isaiah 22:23

Today's Scriptures & Insight:

Isaiah 22:–20, 22–25
My family lives in a nearly century-old house with a lot of character, including beautifully textured plaster walls. A builder warned that with these walls, hang a photo I would have to pierce the nail a wooden stand or use a plaster anchor for support. Otherwise, you would run the risk of the image crashing the ground, leaving an ugly hole behind.

The prophet Isaiah used the images of a nail firmly tucked into a wall to describe a minor biblical character named Eliakim. Unlike the corrupt official Shebna (Isaiah 22:–19), as well as the people of Israel—who saw themselves in search of strength (vv. 8–11)—Eliakim trusted God. Prophesying Eliakim's rise the palace administrator for King Hezekiah, Isaiah wrote that Eliakim would be led as a "pin in a firm place" (v. 23). Being firmly anchored in God's truth and grace would also enable Eliakim to be a support for his family and his people (vv. 22–24).

However, Isaiah concluded this prophecy with a sobering reminder that no person can be the ultimate security for friends or family—we fail (see 25). The only fully reliable anchor for our lives is Jesus (Psalm 62:5–6; Matthew 7:24). As we care for others and share their burdens, let us also point them Him, the anchor that will never fail.

Reflect & Pray
How can you remain firmly anchored in God's truth and grace? In what ways can you support those who are overwhelmed by the burdens of life?

Dear Jesus, thank you for being my anchor. Like your , I know I'm firmly planted in You.

Even those who are tasked with the care of others, either physically or spiritually, must also keep themselves built up and receive some care and assistance from others at time or they will either wear out or burn out.
We cannot always give of ourselves, without refreshing and renewing.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
