In the garden

Bible in one year:
Ruth 1–4

Luke 8:1–25
Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!"

John 20:

Today's Scriptures & Insight:

John 20:–
My father loved to sing the old hymns. One of his favorites was "In the Garden". A few years ago, we sang it at his funeral. The chorus is simple: "And He walks with me, and He speaks to me, and He tells me that I am his, and the joy we share while we stay there no one else has ever known." That song brought joy to my father, just like he does with me.

Hymn writer C. Austin Miles says he wrote this song in the spring of after reading chapter 20 of the Gospel of John. "Reading it that day seemed to be part of the scene. I became a silent witness to that dramatic moment in Mary's life when she knelt before her Lord and shouted, 'Rabboni [Master].' "

In John 20, we find Mary Magdalene crying near the empty tomb of Jesus. There he met a man who asked him why he was crying. Thinking he was the gardener, he spoke to the resurrected Savior—Jesus! His pain became joy, and he ran to say to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord!" (v. .

We too are sure that Jesus is risen! Now he is in heaven with the Father, but he has not left us alone. Believers in Christ have His Spirit within us, and through Him we have the security and joy of knowing that He is with us, and we are "Yours".

Reflect & Pray
How comforting is it to know that you don't have to make this life on your own? When have you felt Jesus' presence intimately?

Jesus, I am so grateful that you are alive and that as Your you live in me!

It is nice that the church and the world set aside this day to recognize the resurrection, the most important event in our lives as Christians. As believers, it should resonate in our lives and actions every day of the year.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
