The cost

Bible in one year:
Judges –

Luke 7:1–
When he received the drink, Jesus said, "It's over." With that, he bowed his head and abandoned his spirit.

John :

Today's Scriptures & Insight:

John :25–
Michelangelo's works explored many facets of Jesus' life, however, one of the most moving was also one of the simplest. In the 40s he sketched a pieta (a photo of Jesus' holding the dead Christ's body) for his friend Vittoria Colonna. Made of chalk, the drawing depicts Mary looking up at the sky as she cradles the fixed form of her . As he rises behind Mary, the vertical beam of the cross carries these words from Dante's Paradise: "There they do not think about how much blood it ". Michelangelo's point was profound: when we contemplate Jesus' death, we must consider the He .

The Christ is captured in His dying statement: "It is over" (John . The term "is finished" (tetelestai) was used in several ways: to show that an invoice had been , a task had been completed, a sacrifice was offered, a masterpiece was completed. Each of them applies to what Jesus did in our name on the cross! Perhaps that is why the Apostle Paul wrote, "Let me never boast except on the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, which the world has been crucified for me, and I am to the world" (Galatians 6.

Jesus' willingness to take our place is eternal evidence of how much God loves us. As we contemplate the He , may we also celebrate His love and give thanks for the cross.

Reflect & Pray
How could each meaning of tetelestai be applied to the cross of Jesus and what He achieved there? Why does everyone have meaning for you?

Father, when I consider the sacrifice Jesus made in my name, I feel humbled and deeply grateful. Thank you for Jesus, and thank you for the cross.

I was thinking on this when I got up this morning. Yes, the physical sacrifice was finished, He left his physical body. But there was more to come for Him to accomplish, that which men could not see. The final culmination comes on Easter.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
