Insulting Religion, Teddy Bears, Puritans and Quakers A British School Teacher was sentenced to fifteen days in Prison and order deported from Sudan for “Insulting Religion.” If she had been convicted of the other charges of inciting hatred and showing contempt for religious beliefs, she would have faced six months in prison and forty lashes. Her Crime...........Allowing her Seven Year Old Students to name the Class Mascot Teddy Bear "Mohammed.” Happily the woman was pardoned after the first week and sent back to England with more of an adventure than she expected while visiting Sudan. The Incidnet makes me grateful to be in the United STates with Religious Freedom I am glad for the Quakers who introduced our Founding Fathers to the the Wisdom of Seperation of Church and State. This was not always the case. Radical Religious Fanatics are not excusive to the Islamic Faith. Ironically, the Puritans who fled Europe to Colonial American for Religious Freedom wanted freedom for their own religion. They soon demanded that fellow immigrants conform to their religious dogmas. Folks who did not conform were tried and punished for failure to attend upon public worship, and entertaining heretical opinions The Puritans had them whipped, jailed and hanged for breaking their strict religious codes that they enforced as laws. The Quakers were banished from the Puritan Communities with a death sentence if they returned. The Quaker Leader William Penn helped to establish the Colony of Pennsylvania as refuge for Quakers but welcomed other minorities. It has been written, "It was because Penn not only tolerated but welcomed diversity that Pennsylvania became the most diverse, dynamic, and prosperous of the original thirteen colonies |

You know...this event with the schoolteacher is nothing new. History is full of similar stories...during the Spanish Inquisition people were encouraged to denounce friends and neighbours. The same happened in Britain in the English Civil War, and in France when the Huegenots were persecuted. And in Germany within the last century, it happened again when Hitler rose to power. Christians have been as guilty of persecution and murder in the name of religion, as any other religion. I think that in today's sensitive political climate, the teacher could have shown a little more common sense. She was living in a Muslim country after all. I've been reading many blogs and reports by Sudanese and as far as I can see most are saying only that she lacked common sense.

My descendents were Quakers and were banished from Massachusetts and were sent to Maine. Back then Maine was a part of Massachsettss. Each year I visit the little old Quaker meeting house where my great great grandfather was married. Iy is still standing on a ridge overlooking the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Sebago Lake. In 2008 we are celebrating our 100th reunion there. "The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind."....T. Paine
