Getting Culture at the Theatre My Senior year of High School. The Drama Class produced "Ten Nights In a Bar Room!" This was a Temperance Era Play about the Evils of Alcohol. I was not in the play itself but I was part of the support staff for the play. I did not suspect at the time, that I would end up in a 12 Step Program in a few short years and spend the rest of my life - helping myself and others to find recovery from the bondage of alcoholism. Four years ago, I was working in a nursing home. I befriended a gentleman who was a residence of the home. He was in there for cardiac rehabilitation. Typical Gemini, he was bored stiff of the place and would often try to escape by driving his car out when he wasn't suppose to. So instead, I would take Jerry out. Sometimes to the Unitarian Church that we both belonged to. One day, we had gone out to a fancy coffee house. We met a friend of mine who worked at the theatre a few building down. Joe mentioned that that night was "Pay What You Can Night" at the theatre. We tossed some $$$$$ into the box and into the theatre we went. The Play was "The Greenbrier Martyr" It is a True Civil War Era Story about A Man who shot a intruder in a Yankee Uniform who was terrorizing his family. He was advised to hide the body. It was discovered months later. The man was tried and hanged as an example. When I drove Jerry back to the Nursing Home, we were debating 1860's politics. After that time, I have frequently gone back to the theatre with Jerry, various girlfriends, an old boyfriend and even the ex-hubby. We've seen Patsy Cline, Scrooge, and the Greenbrier Ghost. Last Week, the Diary of Anne Frank was playing, I opted not to go because I did not want to see such a downer by myself. The next day, my friend Janeil called and asked if I wanted to go see the play. So we did. This week, I went to see The Moving of Lilla Barton with my friend Leah. The Church Leadership attempts to evict the widowed Preacher's wife from the Church Rectory and she refused to budge. It takes place in Alabama and pokes fun at the Yankee Journalist and a Real Estate Biddy. Although I would have much rather poke fun at a Baptist Church rather than an Episcopal Church. It is still good to laugh. My Mecca is to see the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. |

Here in Atlanta they have a Shakespeare Festival at Oglethorpe College. They put up tents around the grounds and have different plays at each tent. Atlanta is not that far from you. It is held in the summertime.
