Life as an Army Brat in Germany

My siblings and I were taught to salute and stand at ease for my Dad the Army Sergeant. We also learned Marching Chants. "Ninteen Sixty Four, My Mother Went to War, She Opened the Door and peed on the Floor and that was the End of the War. Ump Pah Ump Pah Ump Pah Pah - Hay Foot, Straw Foot, Hey Foot, Straw Foot, HEY!!! Ump Pah Ump Pah Ump Pah Pah.

He was assigned to Germany in the 1950's and his family came with him. My father opted to live in town rather than on the Army Base. We rented the upper portion of a house from a German Family. My mother cooked on a coal burning stove. There was no hot running water so it had to be heated on the stove. Across the street were corn fields with ox driven carts.

There was my sister and two brothers. The youngest brother would soon be born. The German in the household became our companions.

Often the American Soldiers would come to town with in their trucks and tanks. They would bring candy for the German . They did not realize that my siblings and I were American Army Brats. We would thank the American Soldiers for the candy and tell them what wonderful heros they were. They would often comment on how amazingly well I spoke English.

Ja! danke! We speak much better English than We do German! Our Daddy is the bald MP who smokes big cigars. Say Hi to him if you ever visit the Stockade. You handsome American Soldier! Hay Foot, Straw Foot, Hey Foot, Straw, HEY!!!Ump Pah Ump Pah Ump Pah Pah

Thanks for the humourous read....and the memory prod! I was in Germany for two years in the 60's working in the DND Schools. What a marvelous experience that was!

I grew up an Army brat, too.Mom enlisted in 43.Met dad while serving in North Africa and Italy. They were married in Naples.Oldest brother was a Special Forces medic.Served at an "A" camp in VietNam in 66-67.Next older brother was Special Forces "A" Team leader, then moved on up.I was following the path but in 1973 signing on the dotted line seemed ill advised.
I do have my respect and thanks for those who served.chuz/
