Throw Back Thursday - Public Shaming and Boycotts

A few years back, there was a suggested boycott on Paula Deen products because she had said the n-word thirty years before. If the woman is from the Deep South, it would not be surprising that she said that word at some point in her life. Most folks know better now. We all have shortcomings, say stupid things at some point of our lives and make mistakes. Does this mean a person's life should be ruined. I remember Wal-Mart discounting Paula Deen candles. I purchased several of them and gave them to my friends.

I remember reading a book called "A Million Dollar Cup of Water." The man video taped himself during drive through at Chick Fil-El berating a fast food worker because of Chick Fil-El's stance on Gay Rights and Marriages. This resulted in him losing his job his CFO position and six figure salary. He was unable to find another job when prospective employers googled him.

I remember reading the book and looking at the negative reviews by individuals who never even read the book. I personally support Gay Rights but I also support Working Folks being treated with dignity and respect.

It is ironical how one bone-headed however well intentioned action on media can cause public shaming and ruin. Fortunately both Paula Deen and Adam Mark Smith were both able to eventually bounce back from the public shaming's.

I generally will not boycott a company because of a political/religious stance but there is no Chick Fil-el in my local community. A few years back, I went to an international convention in Atlanta. I was looking for food and all I could find was Chick Fil-el sandwiches. I bought one and it was fine. I may have been contributing to owners who are opposed to gay rights because of constitutionally guaranteed religious beliefs that I don't share. I am also helping to contribute to the livelihood and well being of working class folks so it's all good.

There were several folks protesting the pulling of Paula Deen Products off the shelves by sending butter wrappers to headquarters of various retailers. I made sure the local dignitaries got some too. I absolutely do not sanction using the n-word but I also realize that folks need the opportunity to learn from thier mistakes, move forward, and do better.

I remember that thing of Paula Deen when she was banned from the Food Network for quite sometime. She slowly came back to life again. Luckily she had her two sons to help her out in her time of need.

I also remember when Phil Robinson of Duck Dynasty quoted his view of the gay lifestyle using Bible Verses. The network wanted to suspend him from the show. The family stuck together and it didn't happen. The network needed them more than they needed the network. Wal-Mart sure didn't take their products off the shelves or discount them. They were making too much $$$ of them.

I never watched Duck Dynasty. I wasn't a big fan of Paula Deen either although I liked her sons. I think Paula Deen is more or less a has been now.

It's better to be a "Has Been" than a "Never Was."
