Throw Back Thursday - My Jewish Grandfather

I only met him a few times. We stayed in San Francisco where he lived for a brief time. He and his wife were in a fatal car accident in the 70's at which point we found out that my mother had a half brother.

I researched his life at years later. He was in trouble with the law at a very young age and sentenced the Preston School of Industry at the age of XIII. This school was meant to teach trades so that they could be productive citizens but there are also tale of abuse. The Reform School is said to be haunted.

My grandfather turned XIX and was transferred to San Quintin Prison where he stayed for a little over a year. Upon his release, he relocated to Chicago where he met and married my grandmother. They were married at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church. Shortly after my mother's birth, he was picked up by the FBI, detained, and eventually released without any charges being filed.

My grandmother went to Kentucky with my mother and filed for divorce. She married the man we called "Granddaddy." I often heard my Granddaddy ranting about Jews, the N-Word and others. When I started dating a Jewish man in my last year of High School. There was friction from my family and I backed off. I wished I would not have. He was a good man.

My grandfather looks so young in this picture. He was just a young boy and had gone through so much.

It is fascinating to me the quality of his mug shot, for a 1931 picture. In comparison, the screenshots of todays criminals when the police is looking for a suspect are always blurry and unrecognizable.

Gal, you are definitely a "Heinz 57 variety" aren't you? But then, most of us are a wonderful mixture of heritage. Good people come in all shapes, sizes, colors and heritages..... and so do not so good people.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

My grandfather had a rough childhood and early 20's but he did manage to get himself a decent life and spent the rest of his years as a law abiding citizen. Unfortunately he and his wife were both killed in a fatal car accident. .
