ThrowBackThursday Queen Mary, Club 210, and Cops looking for Drunks

My late husband often told me that I opened up his world. He always wanted to know where the shady places were and I knew where they were.

One of the places that I introduced him to was the Queen Mary Night Club in North Hollywood. It was hilarious when we took a group of folks from Parents Without Partners to a Drag Queen Show at the Queen Mary. The Costuming, Chorography and singing was actually very professional and well done. The PWP folks loved it but the Higher Uppers had a cow.

Several years later, I am living in Charlottesville, Virginia. There was what is now called the Impulse Night Club for Gays with live shows. I have found men to be problematic in my lifetime and have considered changing lanes. Unfortunately or otherwise, I am not wired that way.

Nevertheless, I decided to check out the club when there was show in town. The show was nothing compared to the entertainment at the Queen Mary. I was quietly seated, sipping on a club soda, watching the show when a young man sat next to me.

"I suppose you are here to pick up the women" the young man remarked. "Actually, No! If you will note the women are here with thier partners. I don't intend to to pick up anyone - male or female!" I replied as I continued to watch the show.

The young man was telling the story of his life including the fact that he had a girlfriend and was bi. I don't judge but looking for hook-ups in a gay bar or any bar for that matter is risky. When he communicated his fantasies about a sensual encounter with a Queen and a cougar, I determined that it was time for me to ghost the hades out of that place.

When I was driving home, I was stopped by a cop. It has been my experience that cops stop cars at the wee hours in anticipation of busting a drunk driver. There are definite advantages to being a long time teetotaler. He advised me of a nonworking taillight. I thanked the police officer for telling me about it and head for home. Safe and sound in my bed. ALONE!!!!

I remember when I lived in the Bay Area and we would go to Finnochio's in San Francisco. It was fun to watch the entertainers. Not all were gay or even bi. They explained that at the beginning of the shows.

My Mom and her friends from their younger years always wanted to go see what they had heard about when they would visit her.

My favorites were, 2 old bags from Oakland. They were really old....lordy, probably my age now

I would have made a hasty retreat too Why do some men assume that ladies out on their own having a good time are there for the picking ?

Great post! It reminded me .. when I was in high school I had a part time job as a waitress and I used to go out to bars with the people I worked with who were in their twenties. I looked older than I was so when we all walked into clubs together I never got carded. Anyway, one of our buddies in the group was gay and suggested a gay bar for us to go to. Those of us in the group like me who were not gay were a little concerned we might not fit in but we went anyway and found it to be a pretty laid back place. Everyone in our group (both gay and straight) felt comfortable there and we were having a good time ... until ... I noticed someone I knew sitting a few tables away! It was one of my teachers!!! I panicked, knowing that I had just been busted by my teacher as underage in a bar. I bet he was just as shaken though!

A day without dance is .... just kidding. I have no idea!

Many years ago, it seems like another lifetime, my best friend and I went with her husband and a group of bowlers to Cincinnati. The guys all bragged about the strip clubs, but the place they took us was just a go-go bar. LOL. So, we talked them into getting wild and going across the river to where the real strip clubs were. We promised we would not sit with them, or cramp their style in any way.
My friend and I sat at a table in the back corner while all the guys went to sit by the stage runway. Pretty soon an older lady came and sat down with us and began to ask us questions. She was the manager and wanted to make sure we weren't there to steal away any of her talent.
We went back there again in a few weeks with another group of friends, including both of our husbands. As we went in, we were greeted with, "Hello!
My friends from Illinois are back!" And she joined us at our table. We were even staying at the same hotel where several of the girls were staying and visited with them around the pool. We learned that it was all owned and controlled by "the company" (in Chicago) and the girls traveled around so clients didn't get tired of the same old routines and girls, and the girls didn't get attached to anyone or any one place.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
