BookClubs,GodAHumanHistory

Our local Book Club will be viewing the wedding of one of our member who will be getting married in Hawaii. We will be in West Virginia watching it via ZOOM!!

If we even get a chance to discuss books, the book I am currently reading is God: Human History by Reza Aslan

According to Aslan, this innate desire to humanize God is hardwired in our brains, making it a central feature of nearly every religious tradition. As Aslan writes, “Whether we are aware of it or not, and regardless if we are believers or not, what the vast majority of us think about when we think about God is a divine version of ourselves.”

But this projection is not without consequences. We bestow upon God not just all that is good in human nature—our compassion, our thirst for justice—but all that is bad in it: our greed, our bigotry, our penchant for violence. All these qualities inform our religions, cultures, and governments.

Personally, I gave up trying to define God a long time ago. I don't know all the details. I am sure my brain is not geared to figure it all out so I don't worry about it.

The reason I know there is a Higher Power is because of the numerous coincidences, Earth Angels and Beyond showing up at the right timing and always managing to find the light at the end of the tunnel. When the cosmos are ready to clink into place, it happens smoothly and quickly.

When I was a it made perfect sense to me when I heard "“Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.” ― Max Ehrmann, Desiderata: A Poem for a Way of Life

A few years later I read, "My Friend suggested what seemed like a novel idea, He said "Why don't you choose your own concept of God?"
Bill's Story in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous

While there are some folks who believe they are the Alpha and the Omega; the ultimate power themselves by Goo To You By The Way of The ZOO!!! Thomas Jefferson quotes " But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket, nor breaks my leg."

I know what works best for me. I have no need to mock somebody else's faith or lack of faith in the name of intellectual curiosity?!?!

BRAVO!!! for the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights, The First Amendment-Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

There is no mandatory religion or required atheism in the United States. Folks are entitled to their own opinions that's a First Amendment Right too.

Kofla's idea about a zoom meeting is intriguing. Not sure how we would all connect because it takes email addresses, I think, or phone numbers?
I'm sure it can be figured out. Perhaps if I get a smart phone, you and I could even communicate some day that way.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Actually, I set up my Zoom account using my FB account. When I sign into Zoom - I use FB to do it.

"I know what works best for me. I have no need to mock somebody else's faith or lack of faith in the name of intellectual curiosity?!?!".........

But intellectual curiosity has you reading and quoting a book about God by a Muslim....and Muslims murder people who mock their faith......Mocking people's ideas is a sign of a healthy society.......

If you read the book, the author states that a person's concept of God is a mirror of who they are regardless of faith. Atrocities have been done in the name of religion under almost all faiths. Mandatory atheism had been enforced suppressing religious thought for the same reason. Religion has also been manipulated by leaders with a political agenda.

Hence The Virginia Statute for Establishing Religious Freedom was drafted by Thomas Jefferson .The statute affirms the rights of Virginians to choose their faiths without coercion; separates church and state; and, while acknowledging the right of future assemblies to change the law, concludes that doing so would “be an infringement of a natural right.” Jefferson’s original bill “for establishing religious freedom,
One of the most eloquent statements of religious freedom ever written, the statute influenced both the drafting of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the United States Supreme Court’s understanding of religious freedom. Jefferson considered it one of his crowning achievements and a necessary.
You certainly have the right to free speech although I am not sure how the first amendment works out in Canada. We are not a totalitarian society

However, mocking people without good cause is a real scummy thing to do especially when it reaches the level to bullying..

.In terms of religion, speaking out against those who stone women or do harm to others in the name of religion is important mocking a poor little old lady who draws comfort from her beliefs and harms no one is just being a dick.

Personally, I won't burn the Torah, tear up the Koran, deface a Buddhist Temple, or carry a sign that says "God hates Gays!"

Ultimately if people’s beliefs do not interfere with anyone else then there is no reason to mock someone. However, if someone believes in a deity and uses that belief to harm others, say, sabotage science education or curtail the rights of certain members of society, then they should be called out for the stupid and harmful beliefs they hold.
