No Hablo Espano!!! Speak WEST VIRGINIAN!!!!

My younger has the dark hair, dark eyes and caramel skin tone that goes with his Iberian peninsula ancestry but he speaks fluent West Virginian. He travels to Florida is the Winter to work concession stands at the State Fair, Carnivals and Gatherings.

His co-workers are amused when the Cubans bypass them - walk straight up to Billy and start talking to him in Spanish. Ironically, it is my blond fair, blue eyed who speaks Spanish. Billy says that he is learning Spanish.

I remember a group of young men going through my line to purchase beer and wine. I checked their ID and declined the sale. They were speaking Spanish among themselves.

The next customer commented, "They are in WEST VIRGINIA!!!! They need to speak ENGLISH. It's the official language of West Virginia."

"The gentlemen are from Puerto Rico. Technically they are Americans but they maintain their cultural identity language in Puerto Rico. English is their economic language" I replied.

Technically, my DNA is 92 percent British but my 2nd Grandparents did speak German. I suspect that they had to learn English real fast when they migrated to Kentucky.

I migrated from Southern California to West Virginia in 1999. I still haven't mastered West Virginian but my has.

Hey looks like he's choking the gator! Fine lookin' lad Star : )
Growing up in S. Cal myself I do speak a little Spanish, prolly more of a spanglish, kinda hard to grow up there and not, later times!
He may be holding the gator that way to keep it from opening it's mouth. I also know a little bit of Spanish just from the SoCal association. I have forgotten quite a bit of it.

This is a bit off topic, but as you travel, have you noticed the differences in accents from state to state? We tend to think all Southerners sound alike, but the sure don't.

That is very true. There are even differences in the accents from Greenbrier County and Monroe County, West Virginia. Some of the locals from Renick, WV have a unique accent. There was a Scottish community that settled in that area. There are folks who comment on my son's accent when he goes to family reunions but I don't hear it. Maybe I've been here too long.

My girl's Dad was from West by God Virginia. That is how he said it lots of times if someone asked him where he was from. He had very little accent. One place he lived was Micco, West Virginia I can't remember the other one but it was near that.

We took our girls for a visit there to meet his family.

I can help you with Genealogy help regardless since I already done genealogy research for numerous Greenbrier Valley natives. I remember checking out the Genealogy for my occasional Theater date who comes from an old Greenbrier County family. I traced his family back to the colonial days when one of his ancestors was killed by a slave. The two daughters were indentured into servitude. (colonial day foster care) The youngest was only two years old and placed into the custody of an Army Captain. The girl grew up and eventually married a soldier who was under the Captain's command. This soldier was a DAR patriot. He received a land grant in Greenbrier County Virginia (now West Virginia) after the war. This was the beginning of the Crookshanks Family in Greenbrier Family. The sister also married a soldier and they settled in Pocahontas County.

There were mostly Southern Sympathizers in West Virginia during the civil war era. They certainly have the Southern Lingo although it may be closer to Hillbilly versus Blue Blood Southern.

I did DNA testing for myself and my boys through Ancest*ry mainly because I have an account there for DAR purposes among other reasons. After getting the DNA testing it can be loaded into GEDMatch for even more detailed data.
