Foto Friday - My Shadow at the Monticello Graveyard

Life itself is but the shadow of death, and souls departed but the shadows of the living. Thomas Browne

One of my favorite pictures - My Shadow in the Monticello Slave Graveyard. It is ironic because there is nothing left to indicate that it was ever a graveyard. Simple Stones marked the places where the mortal remains were planted. Most of those stones are gone. They have returned to the earth in the true sense of the word.

Sally Hemmings who was the Slave Mistress of Thomas Jefferson is buried in the Parking Lot of the Hampton Inn in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her sons owned the property. The Property was sold, resold and resold ad infinitum. There are no remains to retrive. Everything has returned to Earth.

I wear my shadows where they're harder to see, but they follow me everywhere. I guess that should tell me I'm travelling toward light.Bruce Cockburn

Hi Starwomyn. Sandy and I visited that graveyard at Monticello some years ago; I got a something of a forlorn feeling there. And you're right --- "Ashes to ashes .... dust to dust." A great shot --- thank you so much for the post.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Cemetaries are a great place to visit. So much history and you can't help standing there wondering about that person.

Neat pic, Star. I like the shadow and the background. Interesting narrative, too.
