Duck - N - Cover How many remember the old Cold War drill where you were advised to duck and cover in case of Atomic Attack ? Those drills in school also served for tornadoes too. This morning a strong line of thunderstorms drove me into the house with some small hail mixed in. I'll deal with transplanting my potatoes later... |

It never fails if there is a small dot of stronger intensity it has to go over our house. It wasn't the rain drops that changed my plans it was the icy hail chunks mixed in that drove me inside.

I remember the duck and cover drills for tornadoes, in grade school. Our school was built of brick, and had a wide central hallway where we all went. All the class rooms has full wall window, so we needed to get away from those. Today, we are having very warm and windy weather, with possible storms tomorrow. I hope we are done with the ice crap! Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Oh the good old days of hiding under a desk! LOL, yeah, that's how to avoid a bomb, great for tornadoes too! NOT! I've been very close to 9 tornadoes hitting me in my lifetime, two were while I was on road trips, Salina, KS and the other near the Little Rock Airport. Those were scary! The wind has been blowing like crazy down here all this week, hard to get anything done outside without getting blown away. Tomorrow we'll get more rain. So far the storm prediction center has us just in thunder storms, nothing severe.

2nd most hilarious public service short was about painting. They set up 3 houses, painted 2 of them, and then tried to show that the painted ones withstood the ensuing nuke blast better. Not convinced here.

We had them in grade school too. Can U imagine having to duck and cover at our ages ?????? I would never be able to get up out of that position !!!! Might take me a day to straighten up again ! LMAO

Yup, but your head under your wing like a sleeping duck, and don't forget to cover your ass. LOL. We did those drills in school weekly at the height of the cold war.

No storms here of late. Just a cold dry wind, drifting topsoil on farmland. Calgary got over 35 cm of snow a few days ago, totally snarling traffic. Nothing here, and that is only 230 km away.

We don't get a lot of tornadoes here, but the season will soon be starting when they are possible. When we get one, it is usually very large and destructive.

WER HAD THOSE DRILLS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL OUTSIDE CHICAGO BUT WE DID NOT DUCK UNDER OUR DESK BUT SAT IN THE HALL OUTSIDE OUR CLASSROOM. WE DID NOT HAVE TORNADO WARNINGS THEN BUT THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW TORNADOES IN THE AREA OVER THE YEARS OWING TO CLIMATE CHANGE.

I remember the time of the cold war very well. Every day there were updates and news items on the radio and TV. It sure was a very worrying and scary time. Tornadoes in Ireland are not very common,TG, they are referred to here as "mini tornadoes". I just checked on google when our last biggest tornadoe struck, it was on the 24th of January 1952 my birthday, lol.

Seemingly there have only ever been two instances when in Dublin when one of these sirens has been used. The first time was in 1939, when the IRA raidrd the Phoenix Park Magazine Fort for arms. I live about a 10 minute walk from there. The second time was a May Day reclaim the streets event in 2002.
